Standard floor trim sizes. At your local home improvement store you will find a large choice of trim profiles. Casing it usually smaller than baseboard but can be as wide as baseboard is tall. We have a guide in choosing the right baseboard size at the end of the article. If you are using beefier 3 or 4 1 2 inch door trim 8 or 10 inch baseboards are more appropriate.
Standard wood trim sizes and dimensions are important for aesthetics. I like to purchase foot long pieces of different sizes and profiles and construct mock ups of the crown in the room. Baseboards are usually thinner than casings but when both are selected the result is a harmonious cohesive look. When all of the trim pieces coordinate buildings appear balanced.
Standard in most homes baseboards join the wall trim and the floor. A standard 8 foot wall typically has a baseboard 3 to 5 inches tall while a 10 foot ceiling calls for 5 to 7 inches. They can be simple or ornate when coupled with quarter round or other styles of trim. If the sizing is out of scale it draws the eye to the wrong area.
If you opt for standard 2 1 2 inch door molding standard 3 or 4 inch baseboards are going to be too skimpy. Five or six inches would be more in scale.
